World number eight Andrey Rublev played well to come back from a set down and beat Alex de Minaur on Wednesday for a first win on clay this season. The 24-year-old was stunned in the first round of the Miami Open by Nick Kyrgios last time out but a run to the semi-finals of Indian Wells before that was impressive as he exited to the eventual champion Taylor Fritz. World number 12 Jannik Sinner looked in better shape against Emil Ruusuvuori in his second Monte-Carlo match, beating the Finn in straight sets to back-up a shaky three set start against the returning Borna Coric. Rublev and Sinner share a finely poised head-to-head record at one win apiece, although Rublev’s win came in the third game after Sinner was forced to retire in Vienna in 2020, but they look set for many more battles to come over the next few years. Sinner beat Rublev in straight sets on clay last season and that suggests backing him to win at least a set as the likelier of two capable winners is the sensible move here.
