ANDREY RUBLEV
World number seven Andrey Rublev came through a stern test by Cristian Garin to win in four sets on Saturday, overcoming the Chilean via a 13-11 tiebreak in the fourth. The 24-year-old has dropped a set in each of his matches so far at Roland-Garros but he is the kind to become more battle-hardened the further a tournament progresses. Rublev has already won three ATP titles this season, including the Serbia Open on clay, for a career total of 11 titles so far.
JANNIK SINNER
World number 12 Jannik Sinner overcame one of the longest sets in recent memory against Mackenzie McDonald on Saturday to beat the impressive American in three, eventually. The 20-year-old reached the quarter-finals of Roland-Garros on his debut here in 2020 via a four-set stunning of Alexander Zverev and he has been knocked out of both previous tournaments by Rafael Nadal. Sinner is yet to win a title on clay but he owns five ATP titles to his name already.
THE PREDICTION
This match could go all the way between two players who are more than happy to trade long rallies from the baseline. Sinner leads their head-to-head record 2-1 after most recently coming back from a set down to beat the Russian at this stage of the Monte-Carlo Open and notably the Italian has won both of their meetings on clay after a win in the quarter-finals at last season’s Barcelona Open. Rublev took the first match via an early retirement by Sinner at the Vienna Open in 2020, suggesting in realistic terms that the 24-year-old is yet to actually beat Sinner on court. Back the Italian to reach the quarter-finals for a second time in three seasons in a match that could see four or even five sets.
