24-year-old Andrey Rublev returned to world number seven this week after a solid run to the quarter-finals of the Madrid Open was ended by Stefanos Tsitsipas in three sets. The Russian has won three ATP title this season, adding to a now career total of 11, at the Open 13 in Marseille, Dubai Tennis Championships and most recently Serbia Open where he beat Novak Djokovic on clay. Rublev has twice finished runner-up at Masters level, to Tsitsipas at last season’s Monte-Carlo Open and to Alexander Zverev at the Cincinnati Open later in the year.
FILIP KRAJINOVIC
World number 53 Filip Krajinovic overcame a stern test against Frances Tiafoe ion Sunday, beating the American in two tight tiebreaks. The 30-year-old is at his best on the clay, most recently finishing runner-up to Pablo Carreno Busta at last season’s Hamburg Open, but his best run on tour came in finishing runner-up to Jack Sock at the Paris Masters back in 2017.

This could be a tough opener for Andrey Rublev if the Russian starts in Rome how he started in Madrid. The 24-year-old almost lost to Jack Draper at this stage last week and only really found his best level halfway through a round of 16 encounter with Dan Evans, meaning taking Filip Krajinovic to snatch the opening set could be a shrewd move here.
