THE PREDICTION
World number nine Andrey Rublev looks in solid shape this week at the Gijon Open after an assured straight-sets victory over in-form Tommy Paul. The 24-year-old claimed three more ATP titles earlier this season, taking his career total up to 11, but he has struggled to match that intensity since the grass swing. Former world number three Dominic Thiem has also endured a tough few months on tour as he continues to make his comeback to the tour after over a year away. The 29-year-old has dropped just one set this week in convincing circumstances, with a straight-sets victory over Francisco Cerundolo on Friday one of his better results this season. Rublev leads Thiem 3-2 in their head-to-head record, winning each of their last three meetings on tour up to the 2020 ATP Finals, to suggest this is a pretty comfortable match-up for the Russian. Three sets seem likelier than two but back Rublev to make the Gijon final.
