THE PREDICTION
World number seven Andrey Rublev needed four sets once again to get past Federico Delbonis on Thursday after also dropping a set against Soonwoo Kwon in the first round. The 24-year-old has won three ATP titles this season, taking his career total up to 11, including the Serbia Open on clay most recently where he beat Novak Djokovic in three. Rublev reached the quarter-finals here in 2020 before defeat to Stefanos Tsitsipas and the Russian may well have won a few more titles on clay over the years were it not for meeting the Greek in several finals.
World number 37 Cristian Garin has also reached the third round with two four-set victories, although his results over Tommy Paul and Ilya Ivashka are perhaps a little more impressive. The 25-year-old is the more complete player on this surface with five ATP titles on his favoured clay behind him but he has yet to beat Rublev in two previous meetings. Both of their matches were tight in 2019, at Wimbledon on grass and the Hamburg Open on clay, and taking Rublev to win outright her looks a reasonable move. Backing both players to win at least a set would be a suitable alternative if more valuable.
