THE PREDICTION

World number eight Andrey Rublev finished runner-up to Stefanos Tsitsipas here last season with a vastly impressive run of victories over Roberto Bautista Agut, Rafael Nadal and Casper Ruud. The 24-year-old proved himself a handful on clay then but it remains his weakest surface, with players able to make more returns against his brick-wall playstyle on the slower surfaces. World number 25 Alex de Minaur has, surprisingly, never lost to the Russian but the pair last met in 2018 when the Aussie was the up-and-comer. Both players are still young of course but Rublev has totally transformed since their latest meeting at the 2018 Next Gen ATP Finals and this looks like his to lose this time around.

De Minaur owns five ATP titles but is yet to claim one on clay even though he certainly has the tools to excel on this surface. He beat Bernabe Zapata Miralles in straight sets on Monday for some match practice in Monte-Carlo and his pace is likely to trouble Rublev enough for at least a set here, so take that option in favour of De Minaur.
