THE LOWDOWN
Former world number four Belinda Bencic reached the semi-finals here back in 2019, losing to eventual champion Bianca Andreescu in straight sets. The 25-year-old also lost to the eventual champion last season in a straight-sets exit to Emma Raducanu at the quarter-finals stage and she should be considered a strong candidate to reach the second week at least this fortnight after a strong recent run at the Canada Masters, where she won her first WTA title as a wunderkind in 2015. Former world number nine Andrea Petkovic reached the semi-finals of Roland-Garros back in 2014 and she went as far as the quarter-finals both here and in Melbourne back in 2011. The German won the seventh WTA title of het long career last year at the Romanian Open on her favoured clay but she can be a handful on any surface even now at 34 years old.
THE PREDICTION
Petkovic stunned Belinda Bencic in their most recent meeting, taking out the Swiss in three sets to reach the semi-finals of the Citi Open back in 2018, but Bencic leads their head-to-head record 2-0. Four years on from their last meeting, Bencic looks the clear favourite to come through this potentially eye-catching opener in straight sets.
