THE PREDICTION
World number 43 Anastasia Potapova reached the quarter-finals of Indian Wells to suggest her best level is simmering under the surface but she has struggled for consistency in recent weeks on clay, impressing with victories over Diana Shnaider and Liudmila Samsonova before just as handy defeats. The 23-year-old won her maiden WTA title on clay at the Istanbul Cup in 2022 but she is a serious all-court threat at her currently elusive best.
World number 53 Xiyu Wang finished runner-up to Yue Yuan at the Austin Open in early March but she has struggled, similarly to Potapova, to find any rhythm since. The 23-year-old is at her best on hardcourts, on which she claimed her maiden WTA title in Guangzhou late last year, but she too can be a solid threat on any surface at her best. This is a really tough call with both players fluctuating wildly so far in 2024 so back Potapova, who edged their previous encounter in three sets at Indian Wells last season, to earn at least a set to leave the victor up to chance.
