THE PREDICTION
Despite winning her first WTA title last Sunday at the Istanbul Open, Anastasia Potapova still had to qualify for the Madrid Open for a debut appearance in the main draw here. The world number 78 beat in-form Veronika Kudermetova in the Istanbul Open final with victories over Petra Martic, Sara Sorribes Tormo and Yulia Putintseva also impressing. The 21-year-old brings a six-match winning streak, eight including qualifiers, to a first meeting with former world number one Naomi Osaka on a surface that the Japanese star has struggled on in the past. 24-year-old Osaka has not played since finishing runner-up to Iga Swiatek at the Miami Open and with this her first match on clay since Roland-Garros last season it is difficult to decide for whom this is the tougher opening draw. On her current form, backing Potapova to win at least a set looks the shrewd move here to leave the winner totally up to chance.
