In-form Ana Bogdan will break the top 50 for a first time on tour at 29 years old after ousting fellow Romanian Irina-Camelia Begu in straight sets on Thursday. Bogdan ha snow reached at least the semi-finals in each of her last three WTA 250 events and she finished runner-up to Caroline Garcia in the first of those, on clay, at the Poland Open back in July. World number 74 Mayar Sherif is in uncharted waters in the semi-finals of a tour-level competition but the Egyptian has been enjoying her best season on tour so far and deserves it after injuries have halted her progress in the past. The 26-year-old is yet to drop a set this week in Parma after most recently ousting Lauren Davis but Bogdan’s momentum will be by far her toughest challenge yet. The Romanian can be backed to win this first encounter with Sherif outright.
