In-form Ana Bogdan beat Anna-Karolina Schmiedlova in three sets on Wednesday to reach the quarter-finals for a third-straight time at WTA 250 level. The Romanian looks set to break the top 50 on tour for the first time and she can consolidate that with one more win here, although her compatriot Irina-Camelia Begu is one of the tougher draws to face in Parma. World number 33 Begu is yet to drop a set this week after ousting Matilde Paoletti on Wednesday and the third seed only recently won a clay-court tournament at this level at the Palermo Ladies Open in July. Bogdan has been consistently exceeding expectations in recent tournaments but this looks a really steep climb. Taking the match to need three sets could be the shrewd move here but otherwise back Begu to earn at least a set as the just-about likelier victor.
