THE LOWDOWN

World number 24 Amanda Anisimova has enjoyed her best season on tour yet in 2022 after winning her second WTA title at the start of it in Melbourne. The 20-year-old burst onto the scene in 2019 with a stunning run to the semi-finals at Roland-Garros but whilst that remains her best exit yet she has perhaps more impressively reached the second week in each of her first three Grand Slams this season. The American should be considered a dark horse for the latter stages in New York this year, with her best campaign here ending in the third round in 2020.

THE PREDICTION

World number 39 Yulia Putintseva just missed out on a seeding at this year’s US Open and the Kazakh is one of the more dangerous women to draw early. The 27-year-old recently outlasted Paula Badosa at the Canada Masters on her way to a quarter-final exit to Jessica Pegula but she has since lost two matches in quick succession in Cincinnati and Cleveland. Anisimova ousted Putintseva in two earlier this season in Charleston on her favoured clay and straight sets should do it once again here, although an outright pick would be sensible for an accumulator.
