THE PREDICTION
Former world number one Naomi Osaka is a four-time Grand Slam champion after winning the US Open in 2018 and 2020, with Australian Open title in the interceding years of 2019 and 2021. The 24-year-old is at her least effective on clay and she is still making her way back on tour after missing out much of last season for a myriad of reasons, famously pulling out of Roland-Garros after intense media scrutiny on her wish to miss out a press conference citing mental health. Osaka is not far away from her best if her run to the Miami Open final is anything to go by, with great victories over the likes of Belinda Bencic and Danielle Collins before finishing runner-up to the imperious Iga Swiatek. However, the Japanese star’s fitness is questionable at best right now and she has never made it past the third round at Roland-Garros.
World number 28 Amanda Anisimova will be seeded at Roland-Garros for the first time, with her stunning run to the semi-finals back in 2019 announcing the American to the world stage. The 20-year-old reached back-to-back quarter-finals at the Madrid and Rome Masters this month and the semi-finals of the Charleston Open last month. Anisimova reached the round of 16 at the Australian Open earlier this season, losing to eventual champion Ash Barty, soon after winning her second WTA title at Melbourne 2. The American beat Osaka in three thrilling sets in the third round of that Australian Open run and she is currently by far the better player on clay. Back Anisimova to win outright for what looks like an upset on paper but realistically the Japanese star has been stung by a seriously tough opener here.
