THE PREDICTION

20-year-old Amanda Anisimova looked assured in a straight-sets victory over Carol Zhao on Tuesday and she is one win away from finally matching her career-high WTA world ranking of 21st that she first set back in 2019. The American has been enjoying her best season on tour this year, despite a huge breakthrough back in 2019 with a run to the semi-finals of Roland-Garros, with consistent performances set to see her challenge for the top 10 by the end of 2022. After missing much of the first half of her season and then struggling with form for much of the last few months, former world number one Karolina Pliskova may be on her way around a corner. The 30-year-old beat fellow Czech Barbora Krejcikova in straight sets on Monday but her previous loss came at the hands of Anisimova in three entertaining sets at the Silicon Valley Classic last week, a first loss to the American in five matches.

An almost immediate rematch may favour the Czech, who beat Anisimova twice around this time last season both here at the Canada Masters and the US Open – the latter in three sets. Considering Pliskova has taken at least a set in each of their five encounters, including last week’s loss, take that option here as the sensible alternative to a result.
