20-year-old Amanda Anisimova beat Ashlyn Krueger in straight sets on Monday to get her Silicon Valley Classic campaign underway and the American will be well-backed this tournament as a popular prospect. The world number 22 is just two places away in the WTA rankings from breaking her career-high of 21st set back in 2019 but she should have smashed it already after reaching the quarter-finals at Wimbledon last month, where ranking points were denied. World number 15 Karolina Pliskova avenged her shock second round defeat to Katie Boulter at SW19 with a three-set result over the Brit on Monday. The 30-year-old has looked devoid of self-belief in her game for much of this season but a good long hardcourt swing should help bring her back to her world-beating best. The Czech has won all four of her encounters with Anisimova, all coming on hardcourts including twice last season at the Canadian Open and US Open. That is some pretty hefty evidence pointing towards the former world number one and yet Anisimova is the player with far better form. Back the American to win at least a set and leave the winner up to chance. With Anisimova looking set to break her duck here.
