THE PREDICTION

World number 28 Amanda Anisimova made short work of Donna Vekic in the second round of Roland-Garros to back-up her excellent victory over Naomi Osaka on Monday. The 20-year-old reached the semi-finals here back in 2019 as a relative unknown, not long after winning her first WTA title at the Bogota Open. After a few years in the wilderness for s number of reasons the American won her second title at the start of this season in Melbourne in what is shaping up to be her best season yet. Former world number 19 Karolina Muchova is the fairly surprising opponent in the third round instead of the fourth seed Maria Sakkari, who lost in two well-contested right sets to the Czech on Wednesday. The current world number 81 Muchova is on a return from a long injury lay-off but victory over Sakkari, who played well, suggests she is very much back as a creditable threat to the top order.

The pair have met each other on tour before but Anisimova is the more proven player on clay, with Muchova yet to reach the round of 16 at Roland-Garros. The sensible move would be taking the American to win at least a set here as the likelier of two very capable victors but Anisimova has played well enough so far to be tentatively backed outright.
