World number 28 Amanda Anisimova beat Naomi Osaka for the second time this season, and in successive Grand Slams, with a straight-sets victory on Sunday. The 20-year-old’s three-set victory over Osaka at the Australian Open was something of an upset but beating the Japanese on clay was expected of Anisimova after her exploits on this surface, especially at Roland-Garros where she burst onto the scene by reaching the semi-finals in 2019. World number 100 Donna Vekic beat fellow qualifier Mirjam Bjorkland in straight sets on Sunday for a first tour win this season and a first overall since winning the Courmayeur Open late last season. Vekic is well capable at a proper upset here at her best level as a former second-weeker here in 2019 but Anisimova should be considered a dark horse for the title in Paris and backing her outright looks the sensible call.
