THE PREDICTION

25-year-old Daria Kasatkina set a new career-high WTA world ranking of ninth last week after winning the fifth title of her career at the Silicon Valley Classic. The Russian lost out to Bianca Andreescu in the first round of the Canada Masters this week but she will be the better for it at the Cincinnati Open as one of the most in-form players on the WTA tour this season. 20-year-old Amanda Anisimova is within touching distance of breaking the top 20 for a first time after a promising season so far, although a 6-1, 6-1 defeat to Karolina Pliskova came as a surprise in Toronto. The American has reached at least the second week in all three Grand Slams so far this season and she will have designs on matching that and more at the US Open later this month, with a strong run at Cincinnati absolutely vital. This is an incredibly high-quality first round clash and a real head-scratcher as Anisimova has beaten Kasatkina in straight sets in both of their previous meetings, including en-route to her Melbourne 2 title back in January. Back the American to win at least a set here given her record and the help of a home crowd, leaving the winner up to chance.
