THE LOWDOWN
AMANDA ANISIMOVA
World number 32 Amanda Anisimova looked in great shape against Belinda Bencic on Wednesday, beating the recent Charleston Open champion in straight sets for a statement of intent. The 20-year-old looks ready to attempt to emulate her stunning breakthrough run to the semi-finals of Roland-Garros back in 2019 after some difficult years on tour and she should be seeded for a first time later this month. Anisimova won her second WTA title earlier this year at Melbourne 1.
DANIELLE COLLINS
World number nine Danielle Collins won an epic 82-minute first set against Simona Halep before doubling down to beat the former Rome Masters champion late on Wednesday night. The 28-year-old reached a first Grand Slam final at the Australian Open back in January, finishing runner-up to Ash Barty, but she is an excellent all-courter who reached the quarter-finals of Roland-Garros in 2020.
THE PREDICTION
This should be a thrilling first meeting between the American number one Danielle Collins and, more than likely, the future American number one Amanda Anisimova on a surface that both enjoy. Both players own two WTA titles, one each on clay, and both have gone deep at Roland-Garros in recent seasons to prove their efficacy on the surface so much of this match will be about grit. Collins has bags of determination whilst Anisimova can sometimes be pegged back in a match before rallying well and three sets seem likely here in a match that could go well over two hours. Both have excellent results behind them in Rome so far but beating Simona Halep on clay is a rare achievement that makes taking Collins to win at least a set as the likelier victor seem the sensible way to lean here.
