27-year-old Yulia Putintseva lost to Anhelina Kalinina in three sets at the Eastbourne International on Wednesday after a strong showing against Sara Sorribes Tormo in the first round. The Kazakh has reached the quarter-finals of a Grand Slam on three previous occasions, twice at Roland-Garros in 2016 and 2018 and once at the US Open in 2020, but she has never made it past the second round here. This looks a really tight first round clash between Putintseva and former world number 11 Alize Cornet after the Frenchwoman reached the semi-finals of the Bad Homburg Open. The 32-year-old finally reached a Grand Slam quarter-final after previously making the second week on six occasions, including here in 2014, and she stunned Bianca Andreescu in the first round last season. Given her run on grass this week, take Cornet to win at least a set as the likelier of two very capable victors.
