World number 73 Varvara Gracheva qualified well to make the main draw at the Madrid Open for the first time, beating Maddison Inglis and Heather Watson in straight sets. The 21-year-old beat in-form Marie Bouzkova at the Istanbul Open last week before a heavy defeat to Sara Sorribes Tormo. Cornet beat Gracheva in the semi-finals of the Chicago Women’s Open last season on a hardcourt in their only previous meeting, coming back from a set down to eventually win comfortably. The Frenchwoman should be coming through the winner but some recent wobbles suggest backing her to win at least a set as the likelier winner is the sensible move.
