This could be a proper thriller on Thursday between world number 35 Shuai Zhang and number 37 Alize Cornet, both of whom are enjoying one of their better seasons on tour in the latter stages of their careers. 33-year-old Shuai received a walkover to the quarter-finals after Martina Trevisan pulled out of their round of 16 clash but she made the last eight at last week’s Cincinnati Open with victories over Naomi Osaka, Ekaterina Alexandrova and Anett Kontaveit that out her working level inside the world’s top 30. Not to be outdone, 32-year-old Cornet is yet to drop a set this week after ousting two young future stars in Dayana Yastremska and the returning Clara Tauson. The Frenchwoman beat Caroline Garcia two weeks ago at the Canada Masters and she is one of only a handful of players to defeat Iga Swiatek in 2022 with her stunning victory in the third round of Wimbledon.
The pair share a storied head-to-head record that Cornet leads 3-2 at tour-level and 2-1 on hardcourts. Back Cornet to win at least a set here with two good matches under her belt but three sets could be a viable alternative to siding with any one player.
