THE LOWDOWN

ALIZE CORNET

World number 61 Alize Cornet beat Viktoriya Tomova in comfortable enough straight sets on Tuesday to reach the second round of a Grand Slam for only the second time in her last four. The 31-year-old has reached the round of 16 at every major but never further, although she has found plenty of success on tour with six WTA titles to her name so far.

GARBINE MUGURUZA

World number three Garbine Muguruza is always a serious threat but she regained form in a huge way last season with a first WTA Finals title won in Guadalajara. The 28-year-old is a two-time Grand Slam champion from Roland-Garros in 2016 and Wimbledon a year later with two Masters to her name amongst a career total of 10 titles. She finished runner-up to Sofia Kenin here two years ago.

THE PREDICTION

This is no gimme at all for world number three Garbine Muguruza, with Alize Cornet winning each of their last two encounters including a shock three-set victory in the quarter-finals of the Berlin Open last July. The pair share a 2-2 head-to-head record, although Cornet’s first win came by default after Muguruza retired from their semi-final in Brisbane back in 2017. Muguruza should be winning this in straight sets in her current form but Cornet is a tricky customer and often better against the best, so take the Spaniard to come through outright.
