THE PREDICTION
This match has all the hallmarks of a US Open classic between world number 19 Danielle Collins and number 40 Alize Cornet, both of whom have knocked out previous champions this week in Naomi Osaka and Emma Raducanu, respectively. 28-year-old Collins briefly became US number one earlier this season when she reached a first Grand Slam final at the Australian Open, finishing runner-up to Ash Barty, but several months of injuries followed. Collins says she feels as good as back in Melbourne and two straight-set victories so far suggests he is a genuine contender in New York. World number 40 Cornet also played well in Melbourne, reaching the quarter-finals of a Grand Slam for the first time before losing to Collins in straight sets and that makes for some extra needle in this rematch. The Frenchwoman revels in big-stage matches and she will enjoy playing the villain of this piece, particularly as it is probably her last US Open. With three sets fairly likely, backing Collins to win at least a set looks the sensible way out of picking a winner here but the American should be able to edge through.
