Former world number one and seven-time Grand Slam champion Venus Williams would be the most successful tennis player of a generation, male or female, in any other generation but hers and yet she is not even the most successful of her sisters now in the shadow of 23-time Grand Slam champion Serena. The likes of her sister, Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic dwarf what was previously thought possible but Williams was at the pinnacle of the sport in the early 2000s, winning back-to-back Wimbledon and US Open titles in 2000 and 2001 before adding three more trophies at SW19 in 2005, 2007 and 2008.
THE PREDICTION
World number 42 Alison Van Uytvanck has not won a tour-level match since early June at ‘s-Hertogenbosch as she struggles with form and fitness. The Belgian retired form her last match at the Prague Open a month ago and she takes a four-match losing streak into New York that suggests Venus Williams could well grab a famous victory at 42 years old. A fit and firing Van Uytvanck would be able to take this in straight sets, so backing her to win at least one seems the sensible move. However, a one-off on Williams to win could be less heart over head than it first appears.
