An all-Belgian affair between world number 29 Elise Mertens and number 46 Alison Van Uytvanck should be an entertaining contest with their head-to-head record at a win apiece. 28-year-old Van Uytvanck won their first encounter in the Miami Open qualifiers back in 2016 but Mertens returned the favour a year later on clay at the Madrid Open, taking their only tour-level meeting in straight sets. 26-year-old Mertens needed to come back from a set down to Storm Sanders on Tuesday for a slow start at the Libema Open for the eighth seed whilst Van Uytvanck beat Tamara Korpatsch in straight sets and the elder Belgian is possibly the more effective on grass overall. Three sets seems a distinct possibility and backing Van Uytvanck to win at least one of them seems a reasonable risk in leaving the winner up to chance.
