World number 40 Alison Riske is an excellent all-court battler with a penchant for grass and she could be a dark horse at the Nottingham Open. The 31-year-old won her latest of three WTA titles at last season’s Linz Open after a long break with injury but her second WTA title came at ‘s-Hertogenbosch on the surface and she set her best Grand Slam record at Wimbledon in 2019 with a quarter-final exit. Riske was also a finalist at the Nottingham Open back in 2016 but world number 75 Caroline Garcia can better that as she won the latest of her seven WTA titles here in 2019.
The former world number four will be feeling confident after winning the Roland-Garros Women’s Doubles alongside Kristina Mladenovic and a straight-sets victory over Lauren Davis here on Tuesday to make for a potential thriller on Thursday. Riske was the winner of their only previous tour-level meeting at the Miami Open in 2018 and backing the more dependable American to win at least a set here looks the sensible way to avoid picking a winner.
