World number 29 Alison Riske-Amritraj set a career-high WTA world ranking of 18th back in 2019 after setting her best Grand Slam showing at Wimbledon with a quarter-final exit to Serena Williams. The 32-year-old came back from a long injury lay-off last season to win a third WTA title at the Linz Open and she has reached the second week at both the Australian Open in 2020 and here in New York back in 2013. 17-year-old Eleana Yu received a wildcard to make her main tour and Grand Slam debut in New York. The teenager won the USTA Billie Jean King Girls’ 18s National Championships earlier this month.
THE PREDICTION
There is more than a scent of an upset about this match between two generations of American tennis players after Alison Riske-Amritraj recently lost to 21-year-old Elizabeth Mandlik at the Silicon Valley Classic. The 32-year-old has been in impressive form since, though, and she should be the better for her previous shock exit in this opener. Riske-Amritraj should be taking this in straight sets but it would not be a huge surprise to see Yu leave everything out on court in this totally unique atmosphere. A one-off on the teenager to snatch at least a set could be worth it but otherwise the sensible option is backing the 29th seed to win outright.
