28-year-old Aliaksandra Sasnovich is just six places from her career-high WTA world ranking of 30th first achieved in 2018 after an impressive season so far. It is worth noting that Sasnovich has lost to the eventual champion in three of her last four tournaments: Angelique Kerber in Strasbourg, Ons Jabeur at the Berlin Open and Caroline Garcia at Bad Homburg, with a run to the round of 16 at Roland-Garros halted by eventual semi-finalist Martina Trevisan. The Belarussian has been building steam for the best part of 12 months now and she could be a dark horse for the title here this weekend. World number 130 Bernarda Pera won her first tour-level match since mid-May on Monday but the qualifier looks to be up against it here.
