In an odd twist of fate, world number 83 Alexei Popyrin and number 66 Hugo Gaston will meet for the first time on tour here just days after playing an exhibition match at Hurlingham. 21-year-old Gaston won the day in straight sets to look the favourite here but there is little use putting stock in exhibition matches for actual form. Still, 22-year-old Popyrin has been struggling with his form all season long, bringing a 3-10 record into the first round to face a popular player in Gaston. The diminutive Frenchman will be well-backed as a player who inspires support but he has plenty of tricks up his sleeve to back that up. This could be something of a choppy match between conflicting styles but taking both players to win at least a set seems a reasonable way to avoid picking a winner.
