THE PREDICTION

17-year-old Alex Eala received a wildcard to the Miami Open main draw for the second year running and she will be eager to make better use of it this time around after claiming just three games in a defeat to Madison Brengle last season. The Filipino is five places behind her career-high WTA world ranking of 214th coming into this opening tie with Irina-Camelia Begu and despite her great prospects for the future this looks an even tougher draw than last time, especially as she has struggled to make an impact at tournaments so far this year. World number 34 Begu was upset by another teenager, Linda Noskova, at this stage of Indian Wells last time out and she will be determined to avoid humiliation here. The Romanian does take a four-match losing streak into Miami to suggest poor form and the potential for an upset but it would be a hefty surprise. Backing Begu to win outright is the sensible move here, so perhaps a one-off on Eala to earn at least a set is the suitable option for this match.
