THE PREDICTION
World number three Alexander Zverev beat potential banana-skin Sebastian Ofner in straight sets on Sunday to get his Roland-Garros campaign underway. The 25-year-old reached the semi-finals here last season before a five-set defeat to eventual runner-up Stefanos Tsitsipas and the Greek beat him last time out in the semi-finals of the Italian Open as well as the semi-finals of the Monte-Carlo Open last month. Not to be outdone, Zverev beat Tsitsipas at the Madrid Open before losing to Carlos Alcaraz in the final and his level is not far from its best coming into Paris. Still, this should eb a tough second round clash with 21-year-old Sebastian Baez, who set a new career-high ATP world ranking of 36th this week after excellent form on clay. The Argentine won his first ATP title at the Estoril Open earlier this month and he beat solid clay-courter Dusan Lajovic in four sets on Monday.
Zverev beat Baez in straight sets at this stage of the Madrid Open earlier this month but the match was well-contested and Baez will be more of a handful away from the big-serve favouring altitude of the Spanish capital. The German should still be coming through here but taking him to win outright is the sensible call and perhaps a one-off on Baez to win at least a set could be a shrewd alternative.
