World number three Alexander Zverev overcame a stern test by Brandon Nakashima on Friday in straight sets, backing up a choppy but ultimately impressive five-set comeback win over Sebastian Baez. The 25-year-old took Stefanos Tsitsipas to five sets in the semi-finals of Roland-Garros last season before defeat and he has lost two and won one of their three recent meetings on this clay swing. Zverev reached his first and only Grand Slam final at the 2020 US Open, where he took the first two sets before a capitulation against Dominic Thiem.
BERNABE ZAPATA MIRALLES
25-year-old Bernabe Zapata Miralles is enjoying the best run of his career so far after making the second week of a Grand Slam for the first time. The Spaniard will break the top 100 for the first time too after overcoming back-to-back seeds Taylor Fritz and John Isner in Paris and he could reach as high as 73rd with a shock win here.
THE PREDICTION
This is another serious potential banana skin for Alexander Zverev after his five-set skirmish with rising clay specialist Sebastian Baez. Bernabe Zapata Miralles has so far taken out an out-of-sorts Taylor Fritz and big-serving John Isner in nine total sets and the Spaniard should treat this occasion as a nothing-to-lose sort of match against a man that should be beating him comfortably. Zverev looked better against Nakashima but still vulnerable at times and this first meeting with Zapata Miralles could be tricky. Back the German to win outright in a match that should fall in three but could well see four sets.
