World number 41 Alexander Bublik is riding a three-match losing streak on clay but he has endured some pretty tough openers on his least effective surface. The 24-year-old won his first ATP title at the Montpellier Open back in February with a stunning upset over Alexander Zverev but he has since managed just four wins on tour. World number 59 Marcos Giron is riding a seven-match losing streak since an excellent campaign at the Mexican Open, also back in February. The 28-year-old has qualified well this week and the conditions should favour him more than Bublik in this intriguing first round clash but there is clearly a wider issue in his current game after some brilliant results earlier this season. Bublik was the winner of their only previous meeting, in three sets at last season’s Cincinnati Masters, so backing the Kazakh to win at least a set as the likelier victor seems sensible.
