World number 10 Hubert Hurkacz beat Francisco Cerundolo in straight sets on Monday for a solid opener to the Astana Open but the Pole is, remarkably, the seventh seed here in a stacked draw. The 25-year-old recently reached the semi-finals of the Moselle Open before defeat to eventual champion Lorenzo Sonego but his form has been fairly choppy all season long, especially since finishing runner-up to Pablo Carreno Busta at the Canada Masters in August. World number 43 finished runner-up at the Moselle Open to Sonego but he got back to work on Tuesday with a three-set victory over Tallon Griekspoor. The Kazakh will be well-backed as the home favourite here and he is at his best on indoor hardcourts but Hurkacz has won each of their last two meetings to take a 2-1 lead in their head-to-head record. A tiebreak is fairly likely here between two top servers and adding at least one with Hurkacz to take at least a set seems a reasonable combination to help avoid the result.
