World number 43 Alexander Bublik has looked in solid form in his favoured indoor hardcourt conditions over the last few tournaments but a round of 16 defeat to Hubert Hurkacz at home at the Astana Open will have hurt. The 25-year-old beat an out-of-sorts Cristian Garin in straight sets on Tuesday to get his Firenze Open campaign underway and a recent run to the Moselle Open final, where he finished runner-up to Lorenzo Sonego, is proof of what he can do at this level. This should be a madcap first meeting on tour with fellow maverick Corentin Moutet after the Frenchman came back from a set down to oust Flavio Cobolli. 23-year-old Moutet is at his best on clay but a surprise run to the round of 16 at the US Open was hugely impressive last month and he has since won a Challenger event. Two of the more unpredictable players on tour meet here in a match that should stay well away from any accumulators but the conditions suit the Kazakh, so take Bublik to edge this outright on its own.
