World number 12 Jannik Sinner started sluggishly against Tommy Paul on Monday but after a tiebreak apiece he completed an impressive comeback in three sets. The 20-year-old owns five ATP titles after a stellar season last year saw him win four including an ATP 500 event at the Washington Open and also reach a first Masters final at the Miami Open. Sinner reached the quarter-finals at the Monte-Carlo Open last month before a three-set defeat to Alexander Zverev.
THE PREDICTION
This could be a first win for Alex de Minaur against Jannik Sinner if the Italian starts anything like how he did against Tommy Paul. Sinner leads their head-to-head record 3-0 after most recently beating the Aussie in straight sets in the round of 16 at the Australian Open back in January but De Minaur has the game to frustrate him on clay. De Minaur should garner much of the support here as an honorary Spaniard and with three sets likely here the shrewd move could be taking him to snatch at least one. The sensible pick remains taking Sinner to win at least one, though, as the just-about likelier winner.
