THE PREDICTION
This promises to be an excellent battle on Thursday between world number 21 Frances Tiafoe and number 25 Alex de Minaur. 23-year-old De Minaur grabbed the best ranking win of his career on Wednesday by stunning world number four Daniil Medvedev in three sets, avenging a defeat to the Russian at this stage of the Paris Masters two years ago. The Aussie has been in excellent form this season without really applying pressure at the more prestigious tournaments but he leads Tiafoe 2-0 in their head-to-head record to suggest he is the slight favourite to make the quarter-finals. 24-year-old Tiafoe is yet to drop a set this week after ousting Lorenzo Sonego and Jack Draper fairly solidly but the American is far from the level that took him to the semi-finals of the US Open and a five-set thriller with eventual champion Carlos Alcaraz. Both of their previous encounters have seen sets go each way, with De Minaur winning six of eight played, so back the Aussie to earn at least one here and leave the victor up to chance.
