Both world number 105 Aleksandra Krunic and number 32 Yulia Putintseva enjoyed bulldozing displays in their quarter-finals on Friday, with Krunic conceding just one game for the second match in a row. The Serb set a career-high WTA world ranking of 39th back in 2018 after winning ‘s-Hertogenbosch and she is clearly capable of runs like this, although these days her best results tend to come on the doubles circuit. 27-year-old Putintseva is the defending champion in Budapest and playing like it. She was in control against in-form Lesia Tsurenko before the Ukrainian had to retire form their second set – offering some extra rest to the Kazakh ahead of this tough semi-final. Krunic has never beaten Putintseva but their only tour-level meeting went to three sets at Roland-Garros in 2015. Whilst that is some time ago, it makes taking Putintseva to win outright a reasonable risk given her record here.
