THE PREDICTION
World number 10 Hubert Hurkacz first displayed a penchant for the grass back in 2019 in a four-set tussle with the eventual champion Novak Djokovic and he backed that up last season with a huge run to the semi-finals. The 25-year-old beat Daniil Medvedev in five sets before a blistering display over Roger Federer in the quarter-finals, losing to Matteo Berrettini in four in the last four. Hurkacz won his first grass-court tournament at the Halle Open last Sunday with a complete display over, once again, Medvedev and the Pole should be considered a real contender at this season’s Championships.
World number 38 Alejandro Davidovich Fokina only just missed out on the seeds at Wimbledon this year and the Spaniard is a seriously tough opening draw for Hurkacz. 23-year-old Davidovich Fokina reached the quarter-finals of Roland-Garros last season and he finished runner-up to Stefanos Tsitsipas at the Monte-Carlo Open this year on his favoured clay, although has since struggled to match that intensity. A victory over Alex de Minaur in three at Queen’s two weeks ago is a strong result on grass but Hurkacz is a significant step up on this surface. The Pole has won each of their last two meetings, including this season at the Madrid Open, to take their head-to-head record to 2-2 and he can be backed to take the lead now as an outright pick.
