World number 40 Albert Ramos-Vinolas overcame a strong challenge by Swiss prospect Dominic Stricker on Thursday, beating the 19-year-old in three sets. The 34-year-old is a consistent force at this level and on this surface, with four ATP 250 clay-court titles won over the last six years including here in Gstaad back in 2019 and the Cordoba Open earlier this season. World number 118 Nicolas Jarry has spent much of the last two seasons in the wilderness but he qualified well this week to reach the quarter-finals on merit with two battling performances over Thiago Monteiro and Yannick Hanfmann. 26-year-old Jarry has beaten Ramos-Vinolas in their two previous meetings but both came back in 2018 when the Chilean was more in touch with his powers. Given that Jarry has seen five tiebreaks so far in Gstaad, taking at least one here and Ramos-Vinolas to win at least a set looks a decent combination.
