THE PREDICTION
World number 40 Albert Ramos-Vinolas looked in excellent shape last week at the Canada Masters, beating former top 10 players in David Goffin and Diego Schwartzman before a very tight three-set defeat to current number 10 Hubert Hurkacz. The 34-year-old will have to beat another former top 10er here in world number 61 Fabio Fognini and the odds look stacked against him on paper as the Italian leads their storied head-to-head record 9-2. However, 35-year-old Fognini comes in to the Cincinnati main draw as a lucky loser after defeat Marcos Giron in qualifying and he has lost each of his last three matches on tour. Ramos-Vinolas has won two of the last three meetings between the two, albeit way back in 2016 and 2017, but if he can find 90% of his level from Montreal this should be his third victory over Fognini. Tentatively back Ramos-Vinolas to win outright here.
