THE PREDICTION
This could be a thriller on Friday at the Nottingham Open between fifth seed Ajla Tomljanovic and Viktorija Golubic. World number 45 Tomljanovic is yet to drop a set this week after strong performances over Xinyu Wang and Katie Boulter whilst, similarly, world number 55 Golubic has played just three sets to get past an injured Emma Raducanu and most recently Heather Watson. Tomljanovic and Golubic, both 29, both set their best Grand Slam showings at Wimbledon last season by reaching the quarter-finals and that makes for a fascinating contest here on a surface that both clearly enjoy. At a push, Golubic is perhaps the more potent on grass but Tomljanovic won their only previous meeting on tour in the quarter-finals of Indian Wells back in 2018. Perhaps taking this match to see three sets could be a suitable alternative to picking a tough winner here but backing Golubic to earn at least a set as the just=about likelier of two very capable winners is the most sensible call.
