THE PREDICTION
World number 38 Ajla Tomljanovic reached the quarter-finals of the Istanbul Open last week before losing to Yulia Putintseva in three sets. The 28-year-old is solid across all surfaces but she has drawn a really tough opening fixture against Garbine Muguruza, who should be able to rejuvenate her dwindling form at the Madrid Masters in front of home fans. The former world number one is probably at her best away from the clay but she won Roland-Garros in 2016 for the first of her two career Grand Slams and if she can rediscover a level anywhere near what she ended 2021 in as the WTA Finals champion she should be able to find a way through this tricky clash. Muguruza leads Tomljanovic 3-2 in their head-to-head record with each of their five meetings coming on their preferred hard surface. Tomljanovic stunned Muguruza at Indian Wells last October but in front of a Spanish crowd the world number nine should be backed to come through eventually.
