World number 73 Adrian Mannarino almost stunned Roger Federer in the first round here last season, taking the Swiss to four sets before an injury saw him cruelly have to retire. 33-year-old Mannarino was the better player for much of that match and he will be eager to make amends this season on what is likely his most comfortable surface – with his sole ATP title coming on grass from the 2019 ‘S-Hertogenbosch Open. This looks an intriguing first meeting with 24-year-old Max Purcell, though, after the Aussie qualified impressively this week. Purcell reached the semi-finals in Eastbourne last year as a lucky loser, displaying an ability on the grass we have seldom seen since. Mannarino should be too wily to be upset here but it would not be a surprise to see this match go the distance. Back the Frenchman to win outright or take him to earn at least two sets inside an accumulator.
