THE PREDICTION
World number 66 Viktorija Golubic and number 82 Madison Brengle are two perhaps surprising entrants to the third round of Wimbledon this year not least because of whom they have faced. 28-year-old Golubic beat the 31st seed Veronika Kudermetova in three tough sets on Monday and did not look back with a comprehensive win over Danielle Collins in two on Wednesday. Meanwhile, 31-year-old Brengle has come through two fellow-Americans in Christina McHale and stunning an out-of-sorts Sofia Kenin on Wednesday. Whilst fourth seed Kenin was her own worst enemy, Brengle took full advantage of her foe’s poor form to reach the third round of Wimbledon for just a second time.
Former world number 35 Brengle has never made it past this stage of a Grand Slam and perhaps thought she never would but taking inspiration from the likes of Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, who reached her first Grand Slam final last month at the age of 29, will do her the world of good. She lost to Viktorija Golubic in the Eastbourne International qualifiers last month over three sets but at tour-level she leads their head-to-head record 1-0 from way back in 2014. This could go some way towards two hours on Friday before a winner is found but Golubic made the quarter-finals of Eastbourne last week and looks the slight favourite here so cautiously take the Swiss to win at least a set. Favourites have not counted for much so far at Wimbledon.
