THE PREDICTION
31st seed Taylor Fritz is putting together something extraordinary at Wimbledon having played nine gruelling sets to reach the third round just weeks after knee surgery. The 23-year-old left Roland-Garros in a wheelchair last month and is playing here with an almost totally concealed right leg but he has beaten fellow-Americans Brandon Nakashima and Steve Johnson so far and will be a challenge for Alexander Zverev. World number six Zverev has so far looked imperious at Wimbledon against two potential banana skins in Tallon Griekspoor and Tennys Sandgren and the German has barely broke a sweat without dropping a set. 24-year-old Zverev reached the round of 16 here back in 2017 but he has yet to fulfil his potential at SW19.
World number 40 Fritz is an excellent player on grass and his only ATP title to date came at the Eastbourne International in 2019. He beat Zverev in their last meeting back in 2019 but the German leads their head-to-head record 2-1, including a five-set slog in the second round here in 2018. It is hard to see Fritz continuing this intensity at Wimbledon much longer but the American is supremely fit and his forehand can be one of the best on tour when in the mood. Zverev should still be winning this in straight sets given the circumstances but take him to win outright here just to be sure.
