THE PREDICTION
18th seed Elena Rybakina is quietly plugging away in her portion of the draw with back-to-back straight sets wins over Kristina Mladenovic and Claire Liu. The Kazakh looks set to beat her career-high WTA world ranking of 17th earned last year after winning her second of two titles so far but she has a long way to go to beat her Grand Slam personal best after reaching the quarter-finals of Roland-Garros last month. The 22-year-old beat Serena Williams en-route to the last eight in Paris and that kind of form should have sparked fear into next opponent Shelby Rogers. However, world number 46 Rogers fantastically beat the 15th seed Maria Sakkari over two days in straight sets to reach the third round here for only a second time.
Rybakina and Rogers played only recently at the German Open last month and Rogers took the first set before Rybakina fought back to win. The pair share a 1-1 head-to-head record as Rogers won their first meeting, and at a Grand Slam at that, with a second round victory at the US Open last year. Rogers’ defeat of Sakkari means she must no longer be underestimated here and so it looks like there could be sets for both players in this potential thriller. Take Rybakina to win at least one of them as the player with the most grass form coming in.
