THE PREDICTION
Eight-time Wimbledon champion Roger Federer got off to a slow start against Adrian Mannarino in the first round but his second-successive round with a Frenchman saw a more complete performance against Richard Gasquet. The 39-year-old is clearly enjoying his long-awaited Wimbledon return and a three-set match of quality was exactly what he needed to work out some kinks from the first round. Taking him on will be in-form British number two Cameron Norrie, who totally dominated Aussie qualifier Alex Bolt on Court 1 on Thursday in front of an increasingly admiring crowd.
The 25-year-old has won the third-most matches on tour this season and he is slowly coming into the spotlight at Wimbledon. The world number 34 is clearly also enjoying the attentions of the spectators and this certified Centre Court match should be an electrifying first meeting between the two. Norrie has beaten five top 20 players this season already including then world number four Dominic Thiem so he has every chance of claiming a career win against world number eight Federer. Before the Swiss’ performance against Gasquet, Norrie may well have been the favourite on form but this third round clash is now balanced on all manner of knife-edges and should be an enthralling watch.
Federer has lost in every round of Wimbledon apart from the third and round of 16, suggesting he is toughest to beat in the middle of the tournament having gathered enough steam but also not yet fatigued. Playing on Centre Court against the record title-holder is likely to bring the best out of calm, collected and extremely fit Cameron Norrie too and so a winner here is hard to side with. Take both players to win a set and for Federer to ultimately come through this test which is certainly tougher than it looks.
