THE PREDICTION
Seventh seed Matteo Berrettini came into Wimbledon as one of the outside favourites for the title after a brilliant title-winning campaign at Queen’s Club a fortnight ago. The Italian is safely installed in the third round for a second time but he was challenged throughout by Guido Pella over four sets in the first round and Botic Van de Zandschulp in the second. On the face of it, this looks like an easier draw against world number 64 Aljaz Bedene but the Slovenian has absolutely trounced his first two opponents so far. 31-year-old Bedene took out two tricky left-handers in Corentin Moutet and Yoshihito Nishioka on Wednesday and Thursday to the deficit of just 11 games across both straight-set results.
Bedene won the first meeting with Matteo Berrettini on clay back in 2018 but since then the lead has switched to 2-1 in favour of the Italian, with their most recent match coming in the first round here back in 2019. It took four sets to oust Bedene that day and given his searing performances so far there looks to be sets in this for both players once more. Therefore, the wise option is to take world number nine Berrettini to win outright here.
